Operation Smile conducted its first medical program in Haiti in 2008. Following the devastating earthquake there in 2010, Operation Smile sent 11 teams of medical volunteers over a three-month period to provide orthopedic surgery to more than 300 patients. The following year, Operation Smile consulted with Partners in Health on the construction of the Hospital Universitaire de Mirebalais, and provided nursing trainings to OR and PICU staff once the hospital opened in 2012. Since 2008, Operation Smile has provided surgical care to close to 500 patients in Haiti.
